Data-Driven Analysis of Textile Waste Generation and Recycling Potential in Bangladesh

Abstract

The textile sector in Bangladesh is a significant part of the economy, but it is becoming increasingly concerned about sustainability issues due to the rising amount of textile waste and the scarcity of recycling practices. While the textile waste management issue has been studied before, most of those studies have used qualitative methods or examined one factor, there is a lack of studies that combine all factors in one framework and provide data analysis. In this study, the authors have tried to fill that void by using a quantitative multi-variable analytical method for the secondary data set of 5,000 industry records from the publicly available Sustainable Fashion and Eco-Friendly Trends (Ali, 2024) data set on Kaggle. This dataset is a locally renamed version of Butex_sustainable_fashion_trends_2024.csv and includes sustainability data from fashion brands and manufacturing companies worldwide from various countries. There is a global dimension to the analysis but with a focus on implications to the textile sector in Bangladesh. The results of the statistical analysis using the cross tabulation technique, chi-square test, effect size analysis and logistic regression reveal that there is a statistically significant but small association between certification scheme and certification adoption (χ² = 17.61, df = 6, p = 0.007, Cramér’s V = 0.047) and in terms of material type, there is also a statistically significant but small association with certification adoption (χ² = 27.52, df = 15, p = 0.025, Cramér’s V = 0.048). The logistic regression results reveal that the predictors are not statistically significant at the 5% level: recycling program participation (β = −0.0845, p = 0.2429), water usage (p = 0.7854), Market_Trend_Growing (β = −0.1618, p = 0.0727), and Market_Trend_Stable (β = 0.0387, p = 0.6558). As the model fit was low (R² ≈ 0.001), there is a possibility that other barriers such as weak policy enforcement, low recycling infrastructure, low technology uptake and low industry awareness can affect the sustainability performance beyond the variables measured. The main value of this research is the creation of a combined model to explore the impact of market, material, and operational factors on adopting sustainability certification, which stands as evidence to recommend for the policymakers and industry stakeholders interested in enhancing the sustainable textile waste management system in Bangladesh.
